I recently gave a presentation-style seminar to members of the U.S. Embassy – Lima community about setting up and launching a website. The goal was to answer several key questions that most people have about the options available to people who want (or need) a website but don’t know where to start.
The main ideas we talked about included:
- Defining the purpose of your website;
- Looking at the types of website you can set up;
- Technical considerations (i.e., what a website needs); and
- Launching and tools for website improvements
A copy of the presentation is provided here in PDF format: Build Your Own Website
Giving this presentation was a lot of fun since it allowed me to apply the research I had previously done for my own personal interests. It also highlighted that a increasing number of people want to know more about putting audio and video files on the internet.
Several of the questions focused on what types of tools are now available for creating and compressing video footage for the internet. This led to additional questions about how to best determine what types of hosting packages should be purchased if you are planning to put video feeds on your website.
Now, I would love to be able to claim that I knew all the answers to people’s questions. The truth, unsurprisingly, is that I am now engaged in additional research to find out more and get the information back to the attendees.
